Who Needs a Visa for Brazil?

Brazil has many exemptions for citizens of countries wishing to visit Brazil for a period of 90 days. As of now, all citizens of MERCOSUL (Southern Common Market) are exempt from short-trip visas. Here is the complete list of all countries with visa exemptions. Please note that on April 10, 2024, Brazil will require those traveling with a U.S. passport to obtain either an electronic or physical visa.

Brazil eVisa

An eVisa is available for temporary travel into Brazil, but only for nationals of the following countries: Australia, Canada and the United States. The link to the electronic visa process can be found here. The general requirements are as follows:

  2. Visa application form (completed online)

  3. Passport-style photo (2” x 2”, white background)

Applicants younger than 18 must present the following as well:

  4. If only one parent is listed on birth certificate, only that parent’s signature is required.

  5. If one parent has sole custody of applicant, a notarized copy of the court order awarding sole custody and exclusive parental rights must be presented.

  6. If one parent is deceased, a death certificate must be presented.

  7. Copy of passports or other form of photo ID for both parents.

Brazil Visa Application Process:

Brazil requires an electronic form to be filled out before applying through one of the country’s many consulates abroad. First, applicants must submit an RER form that asks about your duration of stay, documents and personal information. A photo is mandatory, and a physical signed receipt of your form will also be required at the consulate. More general information on the process can be found here. Essentially, you must complete, print and sign the RER form and receipt.

After this, visas are handled on a consulate-by-consulate basis. Please take the time to locate the nearest embassy or consulate here (note that the page is only in Portuguese). In general you must schedule an appointment either through physical or electronic mail. At the consulate or embassy, an official will review your documentation and provide further information regarding fees and delivery information.

For all appointments, you must have a physical photograph which adheres to ICAO standards. These are the general requirements:

  • The photograph must be taken from the front, against white background.

  • The applicant's face and shoulders must be centralized on the camera and he or she must be looking into the camera.

  • No reflections, shadows or glares are accepted in the picture.

  • The applicant shall provide neutral face and the eyes must be open and visible.

  • If you wear glasses, the lenses may not reflect the ambient light or the camera. Dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses, or thick frames, are not acceptable.

  • Headgear or hats are not acceptable, except when used for religious reasons. They can not, however, prevent a perfect view of the face of the applicant.

  • Children can not appear with toys, pacifiers, or hands of people holding them.
